Cyber Monday 2009 Bargains, Discounts, and Offers
On the Monday after Black Friday it is the ceremonial beginning of the holiday online shopping season. This is known as Cyber Monday. The physical retail store benefits found on Black Monday are found in cyberspace on Cyber Monday by means of online discounts and promotions on items that shoppers were unable to obtain in stores. The term was invented by Shop.org and has been called a neologism (buzz word) to increase sales, but the phenomenon has withstood the test of time.
The term came about when Scott Silverman, the head of Shop.org coin it based on research showing that 77% of online retailers reported a significant increase in sales on that day six years before 2010. As far as accuracy goes, it holds just about as true as the statistics for Black Friday. Although a busy shopping day, Cyber Monday usually isn't the single most traffic heavy day for sales on websites, and has been criticized by some critics and online media sites.
Regardless of the accuracy of the actual name, many sites offer sharp discounts on items, while the word entices more online businesses to follow suit. Two years before 2010, more than 500 retailers offered discounts on items for the holidays. Expect more sites to give into the word and start offering discounts on any item conceivable for the holiday season.
