The story of Santa's reindeer can be linked to earlier winter celebrations commemorating the winter solstice, an event which occurs once a year around Christmas when the sun is at it's lowest point in the sky. A time of great joy and celebration, this festival was originally called Yule, and marked the re-birth of the sun. For in another six months, it will again reach its peak and begin it's decent for another half year. Although Yule pre-dated Christmas, they share many commonalities such as a decorated spruce tree, gift giving, hanging mistletoe, and unique holiday animals. The Yule goat was connected to Thor, the Norse god of thunder who travelled the stormy skies led by his two magical goats, named Gnasher & Crasher. In some Scandinavian legends, these goats were actually the gift bringers. In other fables, they were responsible for pulling Santa on his journey, where he did not climb down the chimney, rather knock on the front door and ask if there were any well-behaved boys and girls there.
The appearance of reindeer in Christmas tradition began with the famous poem entitled "Twas the Night Before Christmas", written anonymously in 1823. The literature named the eight magical reindeers that guided Santa on his trip around the world. The names of Santa's eight reindeer where Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder and Blixem. Ironically, the Germanic translations for the last two names, Donder and Blixem, meant "Thunder" and "Lightning".
In 1939 the story changed once again. A Montgomery Ward marketing exec published a syndicated Christmas tale telli
